I actually never modded or mapped for T2. All my experience modding the franchise was on the Darkstar engine which powers both Starsiege: Tribes and Starsiege. That engine would eventually be purchased by GarageGames (founded and staffed by ex-Dynamix employees after Sierra shut Dynamix down) and turned into the Torque Game Engine that Tribes 2 used. The great thing about T1/T2 is if you can mod/map/script for one the skills translate very well to the other.
I tried my hand at creating an artillery vehicle with a stabilizing-deployable mode shortly after T:V first came out. Didn't really work out. It became too frustrating to trick T:V into doing it.
The May 2005 issue of Computer Gaming World that revealed the next Unreal game to the world was my inspiration based on their description of new vehicles to the Unreal franchise. Had I completed it it would have been similar to a vehicle that came with Unreal Tournament 3 years later, the SPMA:
Other people did play with T2 though. There were even mods that added mechs to the game. Nothing was safe from modders' greedy hands:
