The sky was somewhat cloudy as Sid and Rachel walked through a large field just beneath the snow capped mountains. They had been walking for hours because of Rachel’s ankle. Sometimes they would stop, and Sid would scout on ahead to check the next hill. Rachel would lie down in the soft grass and look at the Alien planets above. She had never been in space and always dreamed of it. She wanted to feel the excitement her father felt when he would enter space. She let the wind hit her face, and she closed her eyes dreaming of the past.
“Close your eyes Rachel!”
“Why?” she asked,
Sid smacked her tiny head and yelled,
“CLOSE YOUR EYES!” Rachel did as she was told,
“Now this is going to feel weird. I found it this morning in a large tree!”
Rachel squinted and tried not to open her eyes. Sid placed a rock in the shape of a heart
in her hand.
“Ok, now open.” Rachel opened her eyes and smiled.
“It’s a heart isn’t it Sid.” Sid did not smile, he only sighed and shrugged.
Rachel looked at him and then to the rock.
“Is it mine?” She eyed him and blinked hoping he would say yes.
Sid looked at her then into the ground, “Yeah I guess so.” Rachel
smiled and ran off to tell her mother. Sid watched her run then he walked back into the forest.
“HEY!” The voice was ruff and hard. “RACHEL OPEN YOUR EYES!” Rachel sat up fast and tried to catch her breath. Sid was standing over her looking at her. The sky was red and orange, the sun was going down. Sid knelt down and looked at her, “You sleep well? I mean, I wish I could sleep.” Sid’s tone was hard and he didn’t look happy. Rachel looked at him and frowned, “Sorry, I was so tired.” Sid stood up and helped her to her feet. He turned and pointed over the hill, “I found a bunker underground. It’s an old Phoenix outpost, I think its got armor and some medical supplies.” Rachel smiled and looked over the hill, “Well what are we standing here for.”
When they reached the bunker the door was already smashed open by Sid. Rachel walked down the slant and into the bunker. It was cold and smelled of old metal. Sid lobbed behind her and sat his blaster down on a table near a screen. Rachel looked at the equipment then to Sid, “I bet we could call someone and see what’s going on around the planet.” Sid looked at the screen and thought for a moment. He turned and walked down to the supply hold and said, “Maybe, you try and I’ll find some armor and weapons.” Rachel frowned and looked at the old screen. She hobbled to it and pushed a small green button. The screen buzzed a bit then came to a picture of the planet.
“Welcome to the Phoenix Network. You will be asked for a password to enter in our systems.” Rachel squinted her eyes and scratched her head, “Why would a computer this old need a password?” The computer seemed to be outdated and old. Why would the Phoenix still have power to an abandoned station? Rachel stood up and looked at the screen closely. Maybe the Blood Eagle had something to do with the bunker. Sid walked around the corner in medium Phoenix armor and looked at Rachel, “Hey we need to get your ankle cleaned up, and get you into some armor.” Rachel turned and eyed her brother. She had never seen him in armor before and she felt safer after she seen him. Rachel walked over to him and smiled, “I can’t get into the database. There’s some kind of lockdown.” Sid frowned and looked at the computer, “It doesn’t matter now. We need to get to that gate. Go get cleaned up and put on some armor and meet me outside.” Rachel nodded and went into the room.
Outside, Sid sat in the field holding his helmet. He wished he could find out why the Blood Eagle where trying to kill off the Phoenix. He remembered in one of his war classes that the Empire funded most of the outer wilderzone clans for control. The Emperor had no mindset for peace, he wanted everything. Sid pulled at some grass and looked at the spinfuser he picked up from the bunker, “She can’t fight.” He said to himself. He knew Rachel had never really had practice with a gun, let alone put on armor. She needed to learn on her own like he did. Sid turned around and saw Rachel standing in lightarmor, the chaingun she held seemed to extend her arm. Sid stood up and walked over to her, “How’s your ankle?” Rachel pulled her hair back and picked up her helmet, “Its fine, those repair packs can fix anything.” Sid smiled and looked to the sky. It was purple and dark blue, signs it would be dark very soon. Rachel watched him and asked, “Are we staying here?” Sid didn’t look at her, “No, I don’t think so. We need to move while it’s dark.” Rachel sighed and turned to the bunker, “I saw some beds in there Sid, we could rest for a few hours and leave.” Just then a low rumble came from over the hill. Sid looked towards the hill and heard engines, “Damnit! Come on!” He grabbed Rachel and jumped into the bunker.
The Blood Eagle assault ship landed and the pilot and gunners got out. The Pilot tossed his cigar and looked at the sky, “Is this the place newblood?” The new soldier walked over to him, “Ye..yes sir. That’s what the tracker says.” The pilot looked at the newblood and frowned, “Good girl, now we need to find out who turned the bitch on.” The other gunner walked around the ship and cocked his weapon, “Might be some drifters on the planet or even Phoenix!” The pilot laughed and turned to the newblood, “You stay here and guard the ship, me and the gunner here will check out the bunker.” The newblood looked at them and scratched her head, “Are you sure sir. I mean I didn’t join the Bloods to guard ships.” The pilot laughed and looked at the other gunner, “It’s not that your new princess, it’ because you’re a fucking bitch!” The other gunner laughed and followed the pilot down into the bunker. The newblood stood there motionless and lowered her head. It would come.
Sid held a hand over Rachel’s mouth; sweat was falling from her head like rain. Rachel rolled her eyes in the back of her head like she was about to pass out! Sid turned her head to his and said quietly, “Do not make a sound. I’m going to try to kill them ok.” Rachel nodded slowly and felt his hands let her go. It was dark in the holding cell and all she could see was the spinfuser and the yellow eyes from Sid’s helmet. Sid stepped out from the cell and looked up the bunker to the next floor. He could here men laughing and making sick jokes about some newblood. Sid looked at his shoulder guard and noticed one of the skulls eyes was not black, he always got the shit. His mind was on something else when he heard a large banging noise up the floors. He looked back up and frowned. Must be Blood Eagle, they always sound like that. He heard a jetpack and ducked under a metal step behind him. The Blood Eagle was in black lightarmor. His helmet was off and he looked tired. “HEY LOOK SIR! IT’S ANOTHER FLOOR!” Sid wanted to shoot but became flustered. He heard another jetpack and took his chance. He fired a disc at the Blood Eagle’s head and watched it explode in the blue vapor. The other Blood Eagle saw this and yelled for the newblood! Sid jumped out and looked up and seen the other one hovering above him. “PHOENIX SCUM!” He launched a grenade down the floors and Sid jumped behind the step again. The Blood Eagle landed on the first floor and began to run out the bunker. Sid pushed some debris out of the way and flew to the first floor and ran after the Blood Eagle.
The newblood sat outside leaning against the assault ship. She was tired and wanted to do something besides sit against a fat ship. The pilot came running out of the bunker screaming for her to start the ship. She eyed him for a second and saw that he was terrified and sweating profusely. She turned and jumped on the ship to try and start it. The pilot turned around and seen Sid fly up out of the bunker and land. The pilot screamed for his life and ran faster. The newblood looked over and seen a Phoenix medium armor flying towards them, “Holy shit!” She figured the tough pilot would try and fight but his face was pale as if he’d seen hell itself rise from the ground. Sid flew higher and fired a shot in front of the pilot and blew him back. His helmet wasn’t on so his faced burned from the blue vapor of the disc. He screamed in pain and tried to roll over. Sid landed next to him and slipped his helmet off. He was gasping for air and sweaty. The pilot looked up at him and frowned, “You’re just a kid!” Sid smiled and his blade came out from his wrist. The newblood screamed and reached for her blaster. Sid looked up and seen a girl in the cockpit of the assault ship. The pilot slowly began to pull a small pistol from his leg still looking at Sid.
For some reason Sid liked the feeling of his blade going threw things. Maybe he was a killer, or maybe he was just crazy. There was one more to deal with. He looked at the newblood and pointed his spinfusor at her, “STOOOOP!” The newblood was still trying to get her blaster out when she heard him. She turned and stared at him with an angry look, “I’ll kill myself before you kill me!” Sid laughed and pointed to her pilot, “Look at your pilot! I really, really suggest you get the fuck out of that ship.” The newblood spit and held her hands up. Sid motioned for her to step out of the ship. She frowned and slid down from the cockpit. Sid eyed her and noticed that she was an attractive girl; her brown eyes had a hard look to them but the blue streaks in her hair were a bit much. Sid walked up to her; he was angry and looked at her, “Before I kill you, I want to know why your clan came here!” The girl looked at him, and gave a little hint of fear. Sid looked at her breathing heavily, he noticed she was a little afraid and he enjoyed that. The girl took in a deep breath, “I don’t know why we are here, I just signed up to be apart of the war.” Sid cocked his head, “What war?” The girl sighed and looked around hoping for something to happen, “I don’t know I just heard that the Bloods joined the Imps and I signed up to get off my planet! Please don’t kill me!” Sid coughed and looked around, he noticed Rachel had come out of the bunker and was looking at them. The girl saw Rachel, and then looked back to Sid, “I can take you to--” Sid cut her off, “SHUT UP!” The girl was startled and looked at the ground. Sid starred at her and laughed, “You lost your tough talk eh?” Rachel had walked up to Sid and looked at the girl, “What are you going to do with her Sid?” The girl looked at Rachel and smiled then back to Sid, “I swear I didn’t know what was going on, this was my first mission and I was just a navigator.” Sid looked at her and frowned a bit, “Your clan trashed my city. You are going to have the same fate as your friends here.” Sid slammed his armored fist into her face and she fell to the ground. Rachel screamed at him and jumped on him. Sid threw her off and began to beat the girl in her face and body. Blood came from her nose, mouth and ears, she was out cold. Rachel looked at Sid and began to kick him, “What the hell are you doing!” Sid pushed her off and began walking to the bunker, “I’m going to seal this bunker so if she wakes up she won’t be able to get in.” Rachel watched him walk off and then she knelt next to the girl, “I’m so sorry. He is an awful person.” The girl was out cold and barely breathing. Sid came back and told Rachel to get into the ship. She stood up and looked at him, “We are just going to leave her!” Sid grabbed her arm, “Whose side are you on Rachel? Mine?” Rachel frowned and got into the gunner’s seat in the ship. Sid sat in the pilots and started the ship. They would fly close to the gate and walk the rest of the way.
