Hm, well, the flash drive I used is ment as a backup for the hard disk, so everything on the disk was copied to it. Maybe that made SS think the flash drive was a hard disk?

Starsiege can run from a flash drive. I've successfully tested it on one of my high school computers years ago.

I think I had to use a no CD patch to get it to work, but I do remember it being prone to crashing.

    Can try this:

if the USB drive is big enough install the game fresh to that drive, then copy a Starsiege disc .iso file over to the usb drive as well and use Daemon tools to load the .iso so you won't need a no-cd patch, since your system will think you have the cd loaded up and ready.

I never use the game cd's themselves. I always use .iso files I made ages ago and just use Daemon tools. Saves the discs and loads faster than a cd any day.

So, it must be installed on a hard drive first, then move that to the flash drive?

I wouldn't try installing it to HDD first.

When plugged in, the flash drive will show up to windows as a drive like any other. Just install straight to that drive. You always end up with problems when you install something and then just simply try to relocate it's running directory. Problem is, there are often other things at work in running something than exist just in the program directory itself. You might have registry bindings to certain paths, you may have some things installed in the System32 directory pointing to the original program path, etc. It is always much better, and more successful, to install to the drive you actually want to run the program from. In this case the USB drive.

The path relocation problem is why there is a whole genre of 'portable' programs out there. Everything from games to utility applications that can run off flash drives without being installed on your computer. The U3 technology from Sandisk, found on their Cruzer usb drives, was made for this purpose as well.

you have the CD's? you can make your own ISO files. Use something like Alcohol 120%

That should both be able to rip it and make the computer think you have another CD drive with the SS cd in it.

I do not now nor ever want to purchase anything about this stuff.

Could you (if you still have the game) make the iso for me?

    Um. No.

Perhaps you have misspoken but I take that sentence as insulting to the people who created, marketed and sold the game, and to the thousands of people who worked, went out with their money in hand, bought and then played and enjoyed the game.

I know CAN, your own guild, for however long, hosted an illegal pirated download of the game. That's CAN and RedPhoenix's business, and if I am not mistaken the pirated Starsiege download was taken down when RP was busted for it by Vivendi. But if you are expecting such piracy here you are mistaken.

Maybe this instance is different, but it certainly looks similar on the surface to the attitude of many of today's young people: they want their 'stuff' but they'll be damned if they actually want to go out and work and spend their own hard won money on it. They feel everything is owed to them for some reason, and that even if they can't afford something they will still go get it even if it means stealing it, or stealing until they have enough to pay for it with other people's hard earned money.

My response to such a piss-poor attitude will always be "shit or get off the pot."

You don't want to spend money for a game? You don't think it is worth it? Then do without and don't play it.

I have half a dozen copies of Starsiege, in several versions, USA, UK, etc. All bought and paid for with money I earned, because the game was something worth buying. I took one set and made .iso files from it to actually run the game from, while keeping the actual cds safe in sleeves inside one of my DVD cases that holds 1000 DVDs.

Will I give away an illegal copy of something I bought and paid for with my hard earned money to someone with who thinks the game is so worthless that he would "not now nor ever" consider buying it?

    No.

This game is over 10 years old, BDU. Pirating it is of no loss.
