It's possible that it's having a hard time reading the media you're using. As in the physical cd-r that you're using doesn't play well with your dvd drive.

Try some blanks from a different manufacturer. If that doesn't work then check to see if there's a firmware update for your drive.

Ordinarily I would suggest a new firmware, but that is not an option for you since the drive isn't actually an Optiarc it's a QSI and there is no firmware available.

I found several people complaining about that same drive problems at CD Freaks but no solution there.

Liggy and Dee's, where I get my firmware for my Optiarc drives, had this to say about your drive:

manufactured by QSI (Quanta Storage International). Unfortunately there are no patcher or patches for these drives right now.

    Optiarc AD-7561S = QSI SDW-087H

wish I could help, but other than using a cd cleaner on it there is not much you can do except replace it, if necessary. If you can afford a new dvdrw ($20 range on Ebay these days) then a swap out for a better brand/model is generally a 5 minute job.

Usually dvd burners price in the $30 to $35 range with shipping. If there's no firmware available and others are having similar issues then I'd definitely switch brands.

I prefer Lite-On or aOpen burners (a large majority of aOpen burners are actually manufactured by Lite-On) they tend to have frequent firmware updates and I've never had one not be able to read/write any media I've had.

On down side to the Lite-On models is that a lot of them tend to have long lead in times.

Another consideration is SATA or IDE. Your burner won't be able to send data at SATA speeds, so it doesn't matter which type of interface you choose, as long as your motherboard has both types of interface AND you have a free sata power connector to power your drive with (if you're going to use a SATA burner). The main concern when considering interface on a burner should be price.

if you just bought it, then call it in for an RMA. you might still be under warranty, and it's clearly a defective part.

otherwise, you're SOL. you could find a replacement and replace it yourself, but .. meh.
