    Animated Stereoviews of old Japan

This one is a combination of very old tech with modern computer tech. In the late 19th century and early 20th century there was a tech called Stereoview. Basically a dual camera rig that took photos from slightly different angles like a 3D camera, and which were viewed with the old time equivilant of a Viewmaster - remember those? The photos were, of course B&W, and about an inch high, and were painstakingly hand colored by local artists. Here are a bunch taken in the 1880's in Japan, and animated using modern gif techniques so thay they move and allow you to get a 3D effect when vieweing them.

If ancient Japan in color is to your liking here is a small batch of photos taken during the same era and colored, but not animated:

Pretty awesome although it was a little creepy watching the animation.

Yes, I feel like I'm having a seizure looking at those .gif's. The Great Buddha at Kamakura, the Torii gates at Inari... all so different from what I remember two years ago. Good find! /me loves Japanese history

However, when I look at their GamerScores online and see that they don't even have the cojones to get all 1000 points from EA's Fight Night Round 3, I know that I'm better than them, not just as a gamer, but as a human being as well." - Achievements Anonymous

Don't mind james, he was dropped on his head as a child and got his magnetic sensitivity inverted. Thus he confused our northern neighbor Canada with mexico to the south. Anyone could have made that mistake.

Tan. Dark hair. Lazy. Drives a classic Chevy. Is from a country with silly money.

    Yep, Mexican.

And if you weren't lazy we'd have a new site already. Damned lazy Mexican!

Eh, if anything that's pretty weak pwnage. The lazy Mexican didn't even edit the comic for it to fit the situation.

    So very, very lazy.

It fits in context. And that's classic Penny Arcade, you can't edit that.
