Going through some boxes I can can across a CD labeled WSW archives. I popped it in the drive and lo and behold about 1400 files came up.
I think it might be fun to repost some of these stories, and it will me in archive process. If this goes well, I will be posting others...
So without further delay I present 'Death of the Scuzzster' by Soraellion on 6-15-1999
Well, it's been a lousy day for the ol' Scuzzbucket, my lovable little
goad I 'borrowed' from our Cybrid friends awhile back.
There I was, zipping through the enemy's side of the map, weeving between
the tall buildings, my goad's feet occasionally brushing the concrete
walls. The City on the Edge ain't that bad a place to duke it out, and
it's just lovely for a dog-fighter like myself. I swear, there's nothing
better then ducking around a building, and hearing the concussions of that
damned missile boat's rockets smashing into the wall just behind you.
Drives 'em wild!
Anyways, my new mission for the day was diversionary. In other words, mess
with their minds. Now I don't want to brag, but this is just something I
excell at. If you've ever seen the Scuzz causing a diversion, trust me,
your looking at ME, and not the three seekers and talons rushing your
flag.
I was running circles around two mean-looking Apocs, just practically
daring them to try and get a bead on me. I'd dodge, then crouch down
suddenly, and then stand up and fly as their blasters kicked up dirt
behind me. So I'm getting cocky, occasionally taking potshots at these
guys, though there was no way I'd be able to get my little blasters
through their heavy shields. I wasn't really paying much attention,
(probably shouldn't have been reading the Playboy) and quite suddenly I
get nearly knocked out of my seat!
I looked around dazedly, wondering if I'd clipped a building, and I
couldn't help but gape. I was stuck between the two Apocs! Those rats had
me on either side, and were merrily raining laserfire onto my little goad.
My little herc rocked with the blasts, and I desperately smashed the
booster button, and leaned hard on the stick. I dunno how I got out of
that, but I squeezed out of that mess, and cut around a corner, their
beams sizzling the air around me as I took stock of the damage, a storm of
energy weapons trying to turn me into slag.
It looked grim. My left leg had taken a major hit, and was throwing
sparks, the sound of grinding metal reaching me through the cockpit wall.
I had problems controlling the stick as I made for home, those damned
Apocs following me annoyingly, making my life miserable. My shields looked
stable for the moment, and those guys just couldn't hit the barn side of a
broad, so first chance I got, I cut around another building, and made 'em
eat my dust.
I thought I'd got away, when quite suddenly my whole vision goes white,
and I'm smashed back into my seat. I force open my eyes, watching the view
through my cockpit screen spinning end over end. I gritted my teeth,
spinning like a top through the air, and cracked my head against the
controls when I hit.
I came to in a frenzy, a trickle of blood running down my face, and looked
blurrily out the shattered remains of my cockpit window. My eyes widened,
as I took in the sight of the 90-ton Myrimidon, twin MFACS smoking in the
wind, it's monstrous frame dwarfing me as it came. Right at me.
The ground began to shake underneath me, and I struggled weakly, dragging
myself out the shattered window, and crawling slowly to one side, just
trying to concentrate ahead, trying to ignore the advancing monstrosity
bearing down on my smashed goad, and me. I was suddenly tumbled across the
ground, and a barrage of laser blasts and missiles crashed into the
hulking tank's tread. I looked up, seeing a Minotaur tearing up the
ground, headed full speed at the great beast of a tank, its lasers raining
a hot fire across the Myrimidon's hull. I gasped, as I saw the energy
building up in the MFACs, and wished I could only shout a warning as two
whitehot comets of energy hurled at the minotaur. I watched as it's weak
leg was ripped out from under it, and it tumbled into the hard dust,
exploding as it crumbled. Only the Myrimidon between me and the reactor
detonation saved me. The monster of a tank continued forward, sparks
flying out of it's damaged tread. I was just barely out of the way of its
massive treads, taking scant shelter behind the corner of the nearest
building, dragging myself up against the warm concrete, turning back to
look.
The ScuzzBucket, my first herc, slowly was ground under the massive bulk
of the Myrimidon, its treads tearing apart the almost delicate armor of my
goad.
Tears building slowly in my eyes, I was slow in realizing, as the
Myrimidon's frame rolled up onto the cockpit of my goad, that when I'd
crawled out of the remains, I'd seen that my reactor was still intact..
A blinding flash, and I was thrown through the air, a blast of air
buffeting me into the sky. I rolled when I hit ground again, thankful of
the relatively soft dirt, and groaned as my ankle twisted beneath me.
I managed to get to my feet, and limp back to my vantage point at the
corner of the building.
I could only smile as I observed the Myrimidon try and manuever on it's
remaining treads, the ones that rolled over my explosive little goad a
wreck of twisted metal. Turning, I watched as a blaster-totting Basilisk
came roaring up the roadway, and began laying waste to the huge, and now
crippled tank.
I walked back to base, lucky in that the battle had nearly been won for
our forces by now. I even saw a seeker fly by in the distance, the enemy
flag whipping in the breeze overhead.
Seekers.. hmmmm.....
