    Important info for Cyberstorm players

    Hey Missionforce: Cyberstorm fans!

It has occurred to me that since activity on this forum is.. slow.. I should have a stickied thread to address common concerns.

    TROUBLESHOOTING:
WINDOWS 7 USERS: Please tell me your experiences! If nothing else works, Microsoft has released a Windows XP emulator for Windows 7, available at its website.

VISTA USERS: you're going to need an emulator for Windows XP (or for Windows 95 or 98). If you have an old, legit copy of Windows XP or 98, you can run it on Vista with Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007.

XP USERS: you can play Cyberstorm without much trouble.
If the install program won't appear, go to the task manager (alt+control+delete), right click the install application, and maximize it. Don't let the installer run extra system tests; some of them crash.
Once it installs, right click your shortcut for the game, go to Properties, go to the Compatibility tab, and check "Run in 256 colors" and "Turn off advanced text services for this program". Do NOT run the game in compatibility mode.
Whether the game reports "low hard disk space" is effectively random. Don't worry about it.

    PATCHES:
There is an OFFICIAL PATCH for the game. A link for it is here: link. This patch does minor rebalancing and introduces Opportunity Fire, which greatly changes the gameplay.
NOTICE: The old upload of the official patch was corrupted. I have reposted a non-corrupt version, so if you redownload, it should work now. Sorry for the trouble!

There is an UNOFFICIAL PATCH made by this community to make the single player game harder. Read about it here: link
NOTICE: The The same error was affecting this download, too. Now it works, so get your hard cybrids if you couldn't before!

    CONTACT:
If you want to PLAY THE GAME WITH OTHER PEOPLE, send me a private message and I'll try to hook you up. A new thread might be missed since very few people check this forum regularly, but if you send a private message the recipient is usually notified by email.

If you have any other concerns, send me a private message and I'll do my best to help.

You could try the listed XP emulator, or email Crow! and see if anyone else has passed on useful information.

What exactly seems to be the problem? Does the install crash? Not respond at all?

It seems to be an issue inherent with the Windows Program Compatability Wizard or, as known in previous eras, the Application Compatability Toolkit. Besides using the XP emulator the only thing I could think of would be to get zeckensack's glide wrapper, pray it works with Win7 (might not, the WinAPI did get changed a lot) and then try and force Cyberstorm into 3DFX mode which it should natively support.

                Good luck.

Yes, there are others attempting to play on Windows 7.
64 bit won't even let the installer start. Trying the older "Copy the cstorm folder over" bit didn't do much. Putting everything into compatibility mode let me see distorted graphics and start a career, but when we get past the initial briefing into the game itself, the memory can't be read and the game crashes.
XP Mode (the VM with WinXP from MS, that is) seems to be the only solution at this point. Long as I get my Cyberstorm fix...

With 32-bit windows 7, the installer didn't work (it ran, but wasn't visible), so I copied the CSTORM folder to the hard drive. The game ran perfectly (after setting it to run in 256 colors) until I tried to save or load, at which point it gave me this error:

So I tried running it in XP Mode. Same steps as for normal XP, except for one thing: XP Mode's integration features MUST be disabled in order to get the game to run. (with integration on, XP mode is locked in 16-bit color, meaning that the 256 color compatibility option won't work, and it will give you the "Cannot create a surface" error)
The game ran perfectly, except that the Redbook audio won't work (for that matter, it will freeze up if the disk is in the drive, trying to access it), I have attempted to solve this repeatedly, including making a disk image of the disk and virtually mounting it within XP Mode, with no success (besides having it not freeze). The rest of the sound and everything did work though. (in direct contrast to how it was on my XP computer, where all sound except the Redbook audio would stop working mid-battle, and start working after a Rank promotion scene or similar).

I'm having the same problem as Tails. Windows 7 32-bit, drag the CSTORM file onto the desktop, run cstorm.exe in any compatibility mode and get the memory error when I try to save.

@ the Windows 7 users above: Sounds like you're having precisely the same problem the Vista users do. You'll need to emulate Windows XP or earlier to save the game.

I suggest trying XP mode, a nifty feature available from Microsoft as a free addition for Windows 7. Try here :
                              http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx

Once running in XP mode, use my instructions above for getting Cyberstorm to work on Windows XP.

If any Windows 7 user finds this post and tries this, please report back how successful / unsuccessful it is. Ricochet seems to indicate that it is relatively successful.
